Ridley Drops the Ignite GTX and Fits an MTB Frame with Dropbars
The Ridley Ignite GTX tickles the line between a highly rugged gravel hardtail and “we put a dropbar on our hardtail MTB frame.” Ridley is calling it an “Alpine Gravel Bike.” From ...
Combining the technical advantages of a mountain bike with the aerodynamics of a drop bar, the Ignite GTX is the only right race machine for the most challenging terrain.
This ‘monster gravel bike’ has pure mountain bike geometry, with a flatter steering angle for added stability. Our product developers added flex-stays for surplus comfort. Ridley complements this 100% mountain bike geometry with room for coarse-profile tyres (29 x 2.3).
To this we added the venturemax handlebar. This is a handlebar from Ritchey with a lot of flare (24°) and a short drop. The combination of an aerodynamic position on this handlebar and the stability in the wide drops ensures optimal stability. Moreover, it gives more hand placement options and from the drops you can both accelerate powerfully and lower your centre of gravity.
You can look at this monster gravel bike from two perspectives: it boosts the capabilities of a gravel bike or makes a mountain bike universally suitable by adding a drop bar.

The geometry of this ‘alpine gravel bike’ is based on the Ignite SLX hardtail mountain bike, our hardtail cross-country model. So that means pure mountain bike geometry, with a flatter steering angle for extra stability. Our product developers added flex-stays for surplus comfort. We complement this 100% mountain bike geometry with room for coarse-profile tyres (29 x 2.3).
The Ignite GTX has a Tire Clearance of 29 x 2.3. The fact that you can install wider profiled tyres with this geometry is a big plus. The volume of the tyre is larger and therefore resistance is lower. Moreover, with these wider tyres you have less chance of punctures.
The Ignite GTX is available with a suspension fork with 100 millimetres of travel or with a fixed carbon fork. The suspension fork obviously has the advantage of being able to handle an even rougher trail and jumping over rocks more easily.
