Michael Vanthourenhout Wins Cyclo-Cross World Cup

Michael Vanthourenhout secured overall victory in the Cyclo-Cross World Cup this past weekend. The Pauwels Sauzen - Cibel Clementines rider did so in style. On Saturday, he finished sixth in Maasmechelen, followed by an impressive second-place finish in Hoogerheide on Sunday. It marks his very first overall win in the most prestigious regularity competition in this discipline!

The rider from Wingene started the World Cup with a bang, achieving a podium finish in Antwerp and victories in Dublin and Namur. From there, he had to defend his leader’s jersey. A second-place finish in Gavere brought him another step closer to the overall win. After Maasmechelen, Michael was able to travel to Hoogerheide with relative ease, as the title was virtually within his grasp.

'Best of the rest'

Nonetheless, the mud specialist delivered a standout performance just over the Belgian border, finishing as the 'best of the rest' behind Mathieu van der Poel. This strong result boosts his confidence ahead of next week’s World Championships. His trophy cabinet already holds two World Championship medals.

At Pauwels Sauzen-Cibel Clementines, they can also take pride in Eli Iserbyt’s sixth-place finish on Sunday in Hoogerheide. He ended the World Cup in fifth place overall. Among the women, Leonie Bentveld (10th) and Denise Betsema (12th) achieved honorable positions in the final standings. In the U23 category, Yordi Corsus narrowly missed the podium in Hoogerheide, both in the race and the overall World Cup rankings.
